We’re less than 3 weeks away from the official release of Off The Wall (August 10th)!!! this is one of my favorite songs from the project and probably the one that bothered me the most to listen to after Mike passed because of how much I love the original and how crazy it was for me to hear our voices together on the record… Based on a true story, the names have been withheld to protect the innocent (and the guilty haha)

Shouts to everyone I ran into out there, way too many to name, but eventually I’ll try and name them all. And of course shouts to the man of the evening Dallas Penn, king of the Internets. Did Dallas come up with the word internets?

Nah you’re right, it’s not about that at all, but I’ve had a lot of things goin on around me recently that have kinda made me feel like I’m the bad guy no matter how good my intentions may be. So when I heard the track that Pharrell did for the soundtrack to the movie, it kinda perfectly matched how I was feeling at the time.

From the impending controversy with my Off The Wall project to the fact that I’m not trying to follow the mold of a “traditional” New York artist, to the fact that tryin to be successful takes me away from my family all the time…all of these things were on my mind, and I tried to put that all together in a way that was pretty easily digestible but still has some gems in there for those of you who like your verses to have some shit tucked away like easter eggs.

Do I apologize for it? NOPE. Do I give a fuck if it’s misunderstood? NOPE. Despicable Me. Fuck it.

Just happened to get the heads up about this last night from the homies at Subconcious Threads. They told me that Raekwon The Chef one of the original 9 members of Wu-Tang is a big fan of the Y&I tee that I designed with them, and asked for the shirt in each color. Every time I put out a project, from the very beginning of my career, RapMullet.com has been one of the places that I turn to for unbiased, brutally honest, “we’re not sugarcoating shit for you” critique and review of my music. One of the things that I pride myself on is striving towards getting a perfect rating (4 of 4 tapes). So far before the Lifestyles of the Young & Ignorant EP review, I had 3 projects that were each rated 3.5/4. But y’all already know the tattoo, “Great is Not Good Enough” so I want that 4.

I remember when I met Esso at the Mixtape awards. He came right up to me on some “I’m coming for those 4 tapes!” Had me looking at him like “who the hell is this?”. I give him credit tho cause I’m not the most approachable cat nor do I appear very friendly.  (That’s why Dimez does all the networking lol.) ESSO won’t be denied that shine tho.
I love the EP format. Shit, six tracks and I’m good over here. Let’s me rewind and get into what’s being said that much more. And that’s a good thing. “Change Your Life” is the anthem. MCs rarely try to spread a message like that in ’09. ESSO a young cat too so he’s ahead of the curve when he’s saying “appreciate you life”. Indeed. “Get It How You Live” rides that same wave. Descriptive as hell, word play too with a sprinkle of game. “Some ni99as don’t know money from growing up around it / so the only way they know is how they first found it”. That’s real. I still dig “Living Doll”. It’s catchy as hell and he speaking truth. Some females caught feelings off this without question. Now while I’m not rolling around it the Tahoe bumpin “Doin’ It Again” loud as hell I can appreciate the honesty in that track. Cats will front like they can’t relate but this is a relationship they had at one point in they’re life. “Nicotine” plays well as far as deep analogies go. Smokers can most def relate.

I really think Esso has a classic project in him. He has his own lane which is rare in these times. Really he just continues to do him and that’s all you can ask from an artist. One of the best MCs to conceptualize his music and still able to keep it honest. I’m glad he threw this project out there. I know he’s grown as an MC from even when these were recorded so he might not be as young and ignorant as the title would lead you to believe. We’ll call the next joint a little older and a lot wiser.

So the Homie Show (Polo Whatup!) asked me to get on his Harlem Inspired “Come Home With Me (NO HOMO)” project in the Fox 5 Series so I had no other option but to KILL it. Whatup Proven & Sciryl? Show u already know what it is. If only they knew about the 6 Milli…hahaaaaa Whatup Chuck!
